The flagship environmental awareness campaign, originally launched by the Kerala Police to maintain cleanliness across the fragile eco-sensitive pilgrimage zone of the Western Ghats, had been temporarily shelved three years ago due to departmental inquiries. With the official clean chit granted to its chief architect, the state government is fast-tracking the initiative’s full-scale re-deployment ahead of the upcoming pilgrimage season.
What is the Punyam Poonkavanam Initiative?
Launched over a decade ago, Punyam Poonkavanam transformed traditional crowd management at Sabarimala by combining policing duties with voluntary environmental stewardship. The core philosophy encourages every pilgrim (Ayyappa devotee) and duty officer to spend at least 15 minutes a day participating in collective sanitation drives across Sannidhanam, Pamba, and the trekking pathways.
