A new operational era has officially commenced for the Indian Armed Forces. In a formal command hand-over ceremony conducted at the South Block lawns in New Delhi today, General Dhiraj Seth officially assumed office as the 31st Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) of the Indian Army.
General Seth succeeds the outgoing army chief following a stellar military career that recently saw him spearhead the critical South Western Command structure.
Immediately upon taking the helm, General Seth inspected a grand tri-services Guard of Honour and paid his respects at the National War Memorial. Coinciding with this major defense transition, Air Marshal Ashutosh Dixit also assumed formal charge as the new Vice Chief of the Air Staff, signaling a synchronized leadership refresh across India’s primary defense commands.
The ‘Vijay’ Mantra: A Blueprint for Modern Warfare
Addressing senior military commanders during his maiden operational briefing at the Army Headquarters, General Seth wasted no time outlining his strategic paradigm. He introduced a new corporate-military doctrine built around the acronym “Vijay” (Victory), which will dictate the army’s modernization priorities over his tenure.
The structural framework of the Vijay Doctrine rests on four core pillars:
- Vertical Jointness: Seamless, instantaneous cross-communication and weapon interoperability with the Air Force and Navy.
- Indigenized Tech: Eliminating import pipelines by fast-tracking AI-driven drone swarms and domestic electronic warfare arrays.
- Jagrat Preparedness: Maintaining a permanent state of hyper-vigilance along the northern and western borders.
- Asymmetrical Tactics: Utilizing unconventional cyber and space domain capabilities to offset standard infrastructure deficits.
An Unmatched Profile: Who is General Dhiraj Seth?
General Dhiraj Seth brings a highly decorated, multi-faceted operational pedigree to the top post. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), he was commissioned into the legendary Skinners Horse armored regiment.
Throughout his 38-plus years of distinguished service, General Seth has commanded critical frontline formations along complex terrains, including high-altitude strike corps along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and counter-insurgency divisions in Jammu and Kashmir. His extensive administrative experience at the Army Headquarters, particularly in managing corporate procurement and perspective planning, makes him uniquely qualified to lead the force through its ongoing structural reorganization into integrated theater commands.
Immediate Security Challenges on the Horizon
The leadership transition materializes at a highly fluid juncture. Just hours before General Seth assumed command, border security loops were activated after the Pakistani military reported intercepting four hostile drones crossing over from Afghan territory – highlighting the volatile, asymmetric security ecosystem persisting along India’s wider neighborhood.
With the annual Amarnath Yatra officially set to commence on July 3 under heavy security grids, General Seth’s immediate operational focus remains pinned on fortifying internal communication lines and ensuring zero vulnerabilities across the regional commands.
