2026 is being hailed as the “Year of the Indian Chip.” After years of policy planning and infrastructure building, three massive semiconductor fabrication plants (fabs) are officially going live, signaling India’s entry into the elite club of global chip manufacturers.
1. The Dholera “Mega-Fab” (Gujarat)
The flagship of the India Semiconductor Mission, this facility is now producing 28nm chips. These are the “workhorse” chips used in automobiles, consumer electronics, and smart appliances.
2. The OSAT Hub (Tamil Nadu)
Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities in Tamil Nadu have begun processing high-end AI chips for global tech giants. This moves India up the value chain from simple assembly to complex testing and packaging.

3. The Compound Semiconductor Plant (Karnataka)
Focusing on Silicon Carbide (SiC) and Gallium Nitride (GaN), this plant is catering specifically to the booming EV market. These chips are essential for the high-efficiency power electronics found in modern electric vehicles.
The Economic Impact
Industry experts predict that these three facilities alone will reduce India’s electronics import bill by $15 billion annually by 2028 and create over 50,000 high-skill jobs in the next two years.
